The ATAYAL Organization provides the videos below to promote better understanding and appreciation for the cultures of Taiwan that are known as aborigine, indigenous, or Austronesian.
(English/Chinese) Dai Ai 2 TV broadcast a feature television show on Tony Coolidge and ATAYAL's mission in Taiwan as part of its television series features foreigners in Taiwan who are making a difference. This show showcases the ATAYAL founder's evolution from the creation fo the film, Voices in the Clouds, to the Taproot Cultural Exchange Program.
Below are videos from the Atayal village of Smangus (司馬庫斯) in Hsinchu County, Taiwan. This village, nestled deep in the high mountains is the most remote on the island. From Hsinchu, it takes 3 1/2 to 4 hours of driving up a narrow, winding road, through treacherous terrain to reach Smangus. Local residents may even enjoy snowfall during the Winter months. One of the most significant aspects of this village, is that it has developed a sustainable economy based on a mix of traditional Atayal lifestyle and eco-tourism. Residents have adopted a cooperative system of living, where the residents all share ownership of land, and share in the work and profits of the village's income.
